For videos that have a widescreen aspect ratio (16:9) you should use the widescreen preset, and for videos that are in a non-widescreen aspect ratio (4:3) you should use the DVD preset. For HD videos (1280x720) you should use the HD preset. It is important to convert videos with the same preset to be able to quickly merge clips from them.
